Kidney Disorders

Kidney disorders are health conditions that affect the proper functioning of the kidneys, leading to various complications. Some common kidney disorders are discussed below.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

  • CKD is a long-term condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function effectively.
  • Common causes include hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, and certain autoimmune diseases.
  • Symptoms may not appear until the disease is advanced, but they can include fatigue, swelling (edema), changes in urination, and high blood pressure.
  • CKD can progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival.

Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

  • AKI is a sudden and severe loss of kidney function.
  • It can result from various causes, including infections, dehydration, medication toxicity, and kidney trauma.
  • Symptoms may include decreased urine output, fluid retention, nausea, and confusion.
  • AKI can be reversible if the underlying cause is treated promptly.

Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are hard miner* management, medications, or procedures to remove or break up the stones.

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

  • PKD is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of cysts (fluid-filled sacs) in the kidneys.
  • Over time, these cysts can enlarge and impair kidney function.
  • PKD can lead to high blood pressure, kidney pain, and eventually kidney failure.
  • Treatment aims to manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.

Glomerulonephritis

  • Glomerulonephritis is inflammation of the kidney’s glomeruli, the tiny filters that help remove waste from the blood.
  • It can be caused by infections, autoimmune diseases, or other underlying conditions.
  • Symptoms may include blood in the urine, proteinuria (excess protein in the urine), and swelling.
  • Treatment depends on the cause and severity but may include medications and lifestyle changes.

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

  • UTIs can affect various parts of the urinary tract, including the kidneys.
  • Symptoms of a kidney infection (a type of UTI) can include fever, back pain, frequent urination, and cloudy or bloody urine.
  • Treatment typically involves antibiotics.
