A power station is a facility where energy from a particular source is converted into electrical energy. Power stations use different energy resources, but many of them operate by rotating a turbine connected to a generator.

A turbine is a machine that rotates when acted upon by moving steam, water or air. A generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Working of a typical power station

  1. Energy source: The power station uses an energy source such as coal, natural gas, flowing water, wind or nuclear fuel.

  2. Energy conversion: The energy source provides the energy needed to produce movement or rotation.

  3. Turbine rotation: In many power stations, steam, water or wind rotates a turbine.

  4. Generator operation: The turbine turns the generator. The generator produces electricity through electromagnetic induction.

  5. Electricity transmission: The generated electricity is supplied to the electrical grid and distributed to consumers.

The exact process depends on the type of power station. For example, a hydroelectric power station uses moving water to rotate a turbine, whereas a thermal power station uses heat to produce steam that rotates a turbine.

Thermal power station

In a thermal power station, heat energy is used to produce steam. The steam rotates a turbine connected to a generator, which produces electricity. Coal, oil and natural gas can be used as fuels in thermal power stations.

Hydroelectric power station

In a hydroelectric power station, water stored at a height or flowing through a dam is directed towards a turbine. The moving water rotates the turbine, which drives a generator to produce electricity.

Energy conversions

The energy transformations vary with the type of power station.

  • Thermal power station: chemical energy of fuel → heat energy → mechanical energy → electrical energy.

  • Hydroelectric power station: gravitational potential energy of stored water → kinetic energy of moving water → mechanical energy → electrical energy.

  • Wind power station: kinetic energy of wind → mechanical energy → electrical energy.

Power stations make it possible to generate electricity on a large scale for domestic, commercial and industrial use.
